The Society for Latin American studies is one of the principal associations in the United Kingdom for those interested in the study of Latin American affairs. Its current membership numbers over 400, and includes academics, diplomats, journalists, and research analysts from business and non-governmental organisations.

The Society organises an annual conference in March/April and sponsors other conferences and seminars. The annual conference is a popular forum for Latin American scholars worldwide. Attracting a large number of academics and postgraduate students, it invites an animated intellectual debate on a variety of topics, from current Latin American politics to cultural issues.

In 2004 SLAS is launching an Annual Lecture which will be open both to members and non-members. Members of SLAS receive the SLAS Newsletter three times a year and a free copy of the Bulletin of Latin American Research which is published four times a year.
