The CFP Program Initiative (PI) supports development research that seeks to remove constraints and enhance the potential for urban agriculture to improve household food security, income generation, public health, as well as the management of waste, water, and land, for the benefit of the urban poor.

The three main research areas for the PI are:

  • space-confined production systems for low-income urban producers
  • safe and affordable wastewater treatment and reuse by small-scale urban farmers to reduce risks to human health and the environment
  • urban agriculture policy and processes to enhance low-income urban farming

The PI focuses mainly on Sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East and North Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean, and incorporates a gender analysis throughout its work.
