VirtualNation is a communications resource Internet center for Afghans of all ethnics origins and non-governmental organizations. The vision behind VirtualNation is fueled by the concerns for the refugees that have left Afghanistan after the Russian invasion of 1979, known to be the second largest group of immigrants in the world in this century.
According to UNHCR, the number of Afghans who have expatriated surpassed the 4 million mark in 1998, a record for any refugee group in the world. Millions remain dispersed around the globe and are established and do not foresee a return to their homeland, however these individuals who have become successful and are established abroad, still have an immense interest in their land and for their fellow Afghans. The lack of communication and a common vision have isolated them from the rest of the Afghans and their families to share their concerns and interests.
