The South African Institute of Race Relations works for constitutional and economic liberalism. It promotes a society based on:
- Respect for individual rights
- The rule of just law
- Democratic governance
- Free enterprise
- The creation of opportunities for the poor
- Racial goodwill.
The Institute promotes each of these principles through Research and analysis, Public education, Political lobbying, Interaction with business and others who influence public opinion, “Willingness to stand up and be counted”, and Providing leadership with facts. Committed also to human development, the Insittute runs one of the largest bursary programmes in South Africa.
Its publications include:
- South Africa Survey yearbook on living conditions, population, education, labour, business, the economy, health and welfare, violence and crime, the arts and culture, politics, and government. (Also on CD-ROM)
- Fast Facts. The latest macro-economic and key socio-economic statistics together with succinct analyses of pending legislation and other important developments and trends.
- Frontiers of Freedom. South Africa’s leading journal of classical liberal opinion and economic liberalism, published quarterly.
- Spotlight Series. Detailed analyses of public policy, together with the Institute’s research into ways and means of dealing with current problems, such as crime and unemployment
The Institute also offers consultancy services which include access to historical documents and a vaste range of statistics and files on current issues, as well as prepared portfolios on topics requested and Parliamentary and legislative updates.
