The Organization for Social Science Research in Eastern and Southern Africa (OSSREA) is a regional research and capacity-building organisation founded in Ethiopia in 1980. It has national offices and chapters in 21 countries in the region. Its aims include:
- promoting the development of an African research tradition
- promoting collaborative research and facilities for the academic exchange of ideas and publications
- promoting the training of African social science researchers
- facilitating dialogue, cooperation and collaboration between researchers and policy-makers in Africa with a view to enhancing the impace of research on policy-making and development planning.
Its main activities are:
- running annual research grant competitions
- sponsoring and conducting workshops and conferences
- building capacity and supporting research activities
- designing, implementing and monitoring research projects
- networking
- publishing research
