IIRR is a nonprofit, nongovernment organization devoted to improving the quality of life of the rural poor in the developing nations of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Founded in 1960, IIRR grew out of the revolutionary, grass-roots development movement founded by Dr. Y. C. James Yen in the 1920s in China. Beginning with a series of massive, highly successful literacy campaigns for peasants, Dr. Yen and his colleagues evolved an integrated, sustainable, people-centered development approach that came to be known as rural reconstruction.
