The Institute conducts research in Sociology; publishes ‘Sociological Research,’ China’s only sociological journal; and incorporates the Department of Sociology Graduate School, which offers PhD and Masters courses in Social Theory and Applied Sociology.
Research projects have included Urban and Rural Lives in China, Female Labour Migration in China, Urban Poverty in China, The System of Working Units in China, a Comparative Study of Marriage and Family between China and Japan, Rural Migration and Rural Development, and Asian-Pacific Migration.
The Working Committee of the National Sociological Association, which organises annual conferences and seminars all over China, is also based at the Institute.
