IDE’s objective is to conduct basic and comprehensive studies on economic and related affairs in Asian countries and in developing regions,with a view to contributing to the promotion of economic cooperation and the improvement of trade relations between Japan and these areas, and, ultimately, toward the prosperity and welfare of the developing countries.

Maintains a Visiting Fellows Programme, and the APEC Study Centre (see separate entry) including full text of reports from IDE staff.

Library catalogue available online (interface in Japansese). specializes in collecting research materials necessary for the study of economic, political, and social problems in developing countries in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, Oceania, and Eastern Europe. In the acquisition of these materials, emphasis is placed on publications issued not only by private publishers but also by governmental and other public organizations in developing countries.
