Created in 1995 by 14 countries, International IDEA (see separate entry) promotes and advances sustainable democracy and improves and consolidates electoral processes world-wide. It provides a forum for discussions and action among individuals and organizations involved in democracy promotion.

IDEA is also committed to contributing to the debate to advance gender and democracy issues in general, and to promote women’s participation and representation in political life. IDEA’s gender programme aims to:

  • emphasize the quantitative aspects of women’s representation as well as the qualitative impact of women in decision-making processes
  • improve and enhance women’s effectiveness in political positions
  • strengthen their impact in important decision-making forums
