The Health Economics & HIV/AIDS Research Division (HEARD) was established in 1998 as a research and teaching organisation to:
- Undertake academic and applied research into the economic, development and social impacts of HIV/AIDS
- Undertake academic teaching activities concerned with health economics and HIV/AIDS
- Provide training workshops for senior professionals concerned with planning for the impacts of the HIV/AIDS epidemic
- Organise conferences and symposia to identify ideas and strategies and review interventions to deal with the HIV/AIDS epidemic
