The Centre for Socio-Legal Studies is a research institution devoted to the understanding of law in its social, political, and economic context. Socio-legal research involves interdisciplinary research drawing on law and social science methodologies and perspectives, and taking empirical and/or theoretical approaches.
The Centre’s research is currently focused on a number of research programmes, including
- regulation and discretion, including environmental, and health and safety regulation
- business, finance and the law including projects on financial markets, accounting practices, and banking regulation
- comparative media law and policy, including relationships between media integration, economic activity and the state
- human rights, including links between international human rights law and the legal and domestic protection of rights and civil liberties
- international law and compliance and the effects of globalization on the development of legal cultures
