The Centre is actively engaged in carrying out multi-disciplinary research studies in the field of social sciences covering North India especially the states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.

The institute focusses on the following areas:

  • Indian culture
  • information technology
  • comparative religion
  • advancement of education
  • integrated rural development

The institute is undertaking research projects in the following areas: social tensions, agricultural and sustainable development, population, reproductive child health care, decentralization of power (three tier system of governance popularly known as ‘Panchayati Raj’), banking and environmental economics. All the studies are based on intensive fieldwork as well as collection of data with an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Centre organises grass root level to international level conferences, seminars, workshops including lectures of many eminent academicians from the fields of social science, planning, administration and policy makers. The Centre has a well-stocked library containing a comprehensive collection in Social Sciences. The Centre publishes an international quarterly: “Man and Development”.
