A global, non-profit organisation whose mission is to speed the development of safe, effective, and affordable microbicides to prevent sexually transmitted infections, most critically HIV/AIDS.
What does the Alliance do?
- communication via web site, electronic mailings of news and action alerts, highlighting key articles and documents, and maintaining searchable bibliographies and abstracts of articles on microbicide research and relevant science
- track the microbicide pipeline through web-based, interactive Microbicide Research and Development Database (MRDD)
- expand the funding base through legislation, advocacy with policymakers and thought-leaders, tracking and analysing investment in microbicide development, and collaboration with other research and advocacy constituencies
- clarify and influence regulatory processes through public comment, ongoing dialogue, and analysis
- convene broadly representative meetings and task groups to exchange information and explore specific issues with invited experts
- working with and through the media by briefing reporters on background, interviews, developing story lines and providing research materials and contacts
- plan, participate and present at conferences, and support colleagues with background materials in on-line, print, PowerPoint, and CD-ROM formats
- conduct research and poll participants on critical issues
- trouble-shoot, problem-solve, and broker collaborations among Alliance participants and colleagues, and watchdog events threatening the field
