AKHP was established by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in 1997. Its headquarters is in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It aims at initiating and supporting the creation and implementation of an interdisciplinary undergraduate humanities curriculum, pedagogical and professional development in Central Asian universities and community outreach projects that encourage local initiatives in civil society. AKHP builds bridges across communities in the region and helps Central Asians explore and share their traditions and re-establish links with the outside world.

AKHP activities include:

  • teacher training in primary and secondary schools
  • curriculum and pedagogical development in universities
  • community outreach projects
  • institutional development through long-term partnerships.

Educators at 12 partner universities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan have been trained to teach AKHP courses, assess curriculum material, co-ordinate student projects, and conduct further teacher training. Students explore a variety of media and genres through divergent classroom techniques designed to promote active, student- centered learning, encouraging students to come to their own critical and insightful understanding of key issues.

The website features university courses, professional development and outreach activities, the Resource Centre, and details on newsletter subscription.
