AMREF is Africa’s largest indigenous health charity, and for 44 years in partnership with local communities, governments and donors, has worked to research and alleviate Africa’s health problems.

AMREF’s mission is to empower disadvantaged people in Africa to enjoy better health by helping them establish their own self-sustaining health systems. AMREF’s headquarter is in Nairobi, Kenya and there are four Country Offices: Kenya,Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa with field offices in Somalia, Rwanda, Mozambique and Ethiopia. AMREF’s activities are divided into five programme areas reflecting the health priorities of the communities with whom AMREF works:

  • Child and Adolescent Health and Development
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health
  • Clinical Services and Emergency Response
  • Health Policy and Systems Reform
  • Environmental Health

AMREF has a Training Centre running courses in: Community Health; Primary Health Care; Health Service Management; Training for Surgical Teams. AMREF also has a Flying Doctor Service to respond to crises and provide outreach services in remote locations. The site also provides access to:
