This report summarizes the gender-related findings of the 2013 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS), implemented by the National Population Commission (NPC). The NDHS is designed to provide data for monitoring the population and health situation in Nigeria. It is the fifth Demographic and Health Survey conducted in Nigeria since 1990.
The objective of the survey was to provide up-to-date information on fertility levels, marriage, fertility preferences, awareness and use of family planning methods, child feeding practices, nutritional status of women and children, adult and childhood mortality, awareness and attitudes regarding HIV/AIDS, and domestic violence. This information is intended to assist policymakers and programme managers in evaluating and designing programmes and strategies for improving health and family planning services in the country.
