The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, founded in February 1996, is a nonprofit, nonpartisan initiative supported almost entirely by private donations. Its mission is to improve the well-being of children, youth, and families by reducing teen pregnancy. The Campaign’s goal is to reduce the teen pregnancy rate by one-third between 1996 and 2005. To reduce teenage pregnancy, the Campaign provides a national presence and leadership to raise awareness of the issue and to attract new voices and resources to the cause. It has adopted a two-part strategy to acheive this: building a more coordinated and effective grassroots movement; and influencing cultural values and messages by working with the entertainment media and such other influential sectors in society as faith communities. It provides concrete assistance to those already working in the field. The Campaign also tries to ease the many disagreements that have plagued both national and local efforts to address this problem.
