The Desert Development Center (DDC) is a non- profit, applied research institution established by the American University in Cairo. The Center focuses on the ecological, social, and economic sustainability of communities in Egypt’s arid lands. DDC also seeks to improve the overall well-being of Egyptians living in desert areas.

Activities include:

  • agricultural and socioeconomic research: focusing on improving crop yields and applying new technologies to desert life
  • training programs: to help new desert settlers expand and enhance their knowledge of desert agriculture
  • community service: through offering technical support and literacy programs

DDC’s research facilities provide controlled environments, varied plant and animal habitats, technical support for any problems, and access to networks of desert settlers.

The website includes further information on programs, research training services, partnerships and a list of selected publications by DDC researchers.
