The Jaan Tõnisson Institute is a non-profit, non-governmental research and training centre, its aim being to foster democratic development and the strengthening of civil society in Estonia. The Institute arranges research programs, training seminars, courses, workshops and information services for teachers, politicians, governmental and local authorities and members of non-governmental organizations.
Activities include the following:
- To promote democratic values in society the Institute developed a civic- and human rights education program, developing curricula and training teachers for both Estonian- and Russian- language schools in Estonia.
- To support not-for-profit organisations in Estonia the Institute has investigated the Estonian not-for-profit sector and adult education and created a database of Estonian non-governmental organisations which can be found at NGOnet
