AIMS has been established in response to the recent massive changes in Afghanistan. AIMS is dedicated to facilitating coordination through providing information products and services to the entire assistance community.
AIMS is a joint venture between UNOCHA and UNDP, reporting directly to the UN Coordinator for Afghanistan. AIMS will receive strategic guidance from an Advisory Board composed of members from the UN, NGO and donor community working for Afghanistan.
Goals of aims:
- the development and application of data standards to support the sharing of information between organizations across locations and sectors. These include geocoding for settlements across Afghanistan, the development of rapid assessment forms for IDPs and sector coding to track who is doing what where
- the development and dissemination of standard information products. These products are developed in partnership with operational organizations, and currently include maps showing the security situation inside Afghanistan, point locations of IDP groups, and Route Maps
- the facilitation of information gathering and dissemination throughout the humanitarian community working in Afghanistan. As well as providing physical meeting space, AIMS provides technical advice to individuals and organizations, and advocates for better information management throughout the assistance operation
