ISSER’s mission is to carry out activities that would promote the socio-economic development of Ghana in particular and Africa in general. Specifically, the Institute is expected to undertake research in the social sciences, and promote human resource development that: has an immediate bearing on the problems and the development needs of Ghana in particular and Africa in general; relates to special assignments from government and other agencies as a way of providing guidance, support and advice; is in keeping with the academic purposes of the University especially in relation to advanced teaching, enriching and adding to the teaching and effectiveness of institutional programs in the social sciences; and serves to monitor and evaluate the effects of development policies, projects and programs both in terms of their objectives and general consequences. ISSER’s goal is to be recognized as a centre for comprehensive and sustained research and training in the social sciences. ISSER’s objectives are: to build capacity for social science research in Ghana; to carry out high quality policy-relevant and development-oriented research and disseminate the results to facilitate the socio-economic development of Ghana and Africa; to participate in the process of formulating, monitoring and evaluating policies and programs; to encourage regional research co-operation aimed at promoting regional integration; and to attract researchers from other units of the University and elsewhere for collaborative and/or independent research.
