Research spans over a wide time framework – from the Middle ages until modern days – and focuses on significant issues of general Balkan and European history. It has a considerable theoretical and academic impact and has served different state institutions.

In recent years the Institute’s scholars have focused on the historical past and contemporary development of the Balkan states, as well as on issues in the cultural, demographic and linguistic heritage of the Balkan nations.
