The Financial Diaries project, is household survey that examining financial management in poor households in South Africa. Outputs of this project are based on findings from interviews conducted accross three different areas in South Africa namely, Cape Town, Johannesburg and the Eastern Cape. After a year, the project released its findings in May 2005 in Johannesburg.

This website provides:

  • initial findings of the Financial Diaries study, comprising a brief review of all the findings and a sample description in the Sample Overview
  • links to a database on household profiles covering a detailed household description; a summary of net worth, household members and number of financial instruments; and an example of a monthly cash flow statement. The search function allows the viewer to segment households by area, dwelling type, income and net worth.
