The Centre was created in the beginning of the year 2000 at the University of Latvia in order to meet the challenges of Latvia’s accession to the EU and to establish a forum for dealing with them.

It aims to:

  • promote and support research – both academic and applied – and teaching in areas relevant to Latvia’s place and future in Europe, in both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary activities
  • involve students engaged in postgraduate / advanced studies in the constituent disciplines in the research activities of the Centre
  • promote the dissemination of research through working papers, seminars and conferences

Research areas include:

  • regional studies of the Baltic region
  • EU relations and integration issues
  • labour market
  • economic transition
