The EuropeAid Co-operation Office took over the role of the Common Service for External Relations (EU Directorate E) on January 1st 2001. It will manage 80 per cent of the EU’s external assistance, amounting to more than € 9 billion annually in aid projects.
The Office will manage the full project cycle, from identification to evaluation and be responsible for the technical and financial aspects of most EU and European Development Fund external assistance programmes. A key feature of the new structure is devolution of significant responsibilities to the field.
