The Centre for the Future State was established at IDS to provide critical and practical understanding of these issues – principally for policymakers, politicians, political parties, scholars and civil society organizations within developing countries, and for aid agencies, development NGOs and applied researchers in the ‘North’.

The Centre has three objectives:

  • to undertake and disseminate innovative, high quality research on key issues relating to the future of public authority in developing countries
  • to help important audiences understand and assimilate the wide range of research that is being published on these issues
  • to assist researchers from developing countries to contribute more effectively to applied development policy debates both within their own countries and, more important, outside their countries, at regional and global levels
