Independent and international commission established in May 1998, aiming to undertake a global review of the development effectiveness of large dams and to develop internationally acceptable criteria and guidelines for future decision–making on dams.

Plan of work includes a survey of 150 dam projects and in depth case studies of projects in:

  • Pakistan Tarbela Dam and Indus River Basin

  • USA Grand Coulee Dam and Columbia Basin
  • Zambia / Zimbabwe Kariba Dam and Zambezi River Basin
