The National Center for Applied Research on Rural Development (FOFIFA) was created in 1974 to promote agricultural research in Madagascar. FOFIFA provides research in order to create an in-depth understanding of issues with direct relevance to various stakeholders in rural development including farmers, private sector, NGO’s, etc.
FOFIFA collaborates with regional and international research institutes and networks involved in rural development issues in Madagascar as well as countries in Central and Eastern Africa.
FOFIFA has 3 main activities:
- conducting both thematic and applied research to improve agricultural productive systems in Madagascar as well as other countries in the region
- supporting sustainable development through technology transfer to stakeholders and the dissemination of the outcomes of applied research projects
- capacity building through introducing modern technology and necessary training of human resources.
FOFIFA publications address a wide array of actors including the national and international scientific community and the public at large. The main publication is the monthly agricultural review bringing together researchers, actors in rural development, students and donors.
The website is available in French and contains the center’s publications as well as more details on its activities.
