The Dryland Program’s main goal is to get decision makers to give more weight in projects to improving the management of natural resources in dryland ecosystems. In practice, this means putting more emphasis on sound policies in areas such as irrigated and rainfed agriculture, soil management and livestock. From 1990 to 1995, the Bank financed 108 projects that improve natural resource management in dryland areas, worth $6.8 billion. Currently, the Bank has 57 projects in the pipeline aimed at desertification problems, totaling another $2.3 billion during the next three years.
