Research centre. NIA conducts research, training, health information dissemination, and other programs relevant to ageing and older people. It sponsors research on ageing through extramural and intramural programs. The extramural program funds research and training at universities, hospitals, medical centres, and other public and private organizations nationwide. The intramural program conducts basic and clinical research in Baltimore, MD, and on the NIH campus in Bethesda, MD. Much of the research is health-oriented and based on the situation in the USA.

NIA has established eleven centres on the demography of aging to provide innovative and policy-relevant research on health, social factors, economics, and other issues that affect the U.S. older population.
