UK governmental agency, part of the National Environment Research Council (NERC), researching into all aspects of the UK terrestrial environment and its resources. Maintains a network of specialist research stations including the Environmental Information Centre (EIC), which aims to advance the use of computers for handling data/information in terrestrial ecology and to provide access to NERC data holdings, which include datasets from the Biological Databases Unit (spatially/temporally referenced databases on UK biodiversity, and databases on wildlife conservation sites in Europe), Remote Sensing Unit, Geographical Information Systems Unit. Maintains a network with access to data from other UK sites, as part of the UK Environmental Change Network (ECN: see separate entry)
