ECN is the UK integrated long-term environmental monitoring network. Aims to collect, store analyse and interpret long-term data based on a series of key physical, chemical and biological variables related to environmental change. Collects and integrates data through a national network of bodies (governmental, research departments, statutory bodies) and research sites. Coordinated through the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE: see separate entry).

Information services include:

(a) WWW site: includes direct interactive access to the ECN summary database and real-time data from an automatic weather station in northern England

(b) Database: combined database and geographic information system. Linked meta-database has information on origins and scope of data. Available via the ITE’s Environmental Information Centre
