The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation is committed to the promotion of sustainable reconciliation, transitional justice and democratic nation-building in South Africa and a number of other African countries through research, analysis and targeted interventions. It seeks to understand situations of conflict, while endeavouring to promote viable ways of transcending these conflicts. It provides situational analyses, builds capacity and produces resources for social transformation and development. The Institute’s three main programmes are:

  • Transitional Justice in Africa
  • Reconciliation and Reconstruction
  • Political Analysis

The Political Analysis Programme tracks reconciliation, transformation and development in South Africa. The programme provides qualitative and data-based analysis. The programmes research publications include the South Africa Reconciliation Barometer – measuring public opinion on crime, the economy and the government and the Economic Transformation Audit. This audit tracks growth, empowerment, poverty, employment, education and other drivers of material change in South Africa. The institute also has a Transitional Justice Literature Database which can be accessed from the website.
