The Polio Erradication Initiative is a consortium of several countries and organisations, but is spearheaded by the World Health Organization, Rotary International, The Center for Disease Control, and the United Nations Children’s Fund.

ThePolio Erradication Initiative aims to:

  • interrupt the transmission of the wild poliovirus as quickly as possible
  • work towards global certification of polio eradication, including containment of the wild poliovirus
  • develop and implement polio immunisation policy for the post-certification era
  • support the strengthening of routine immunisation and surveillance strategies, in support of UN Millennium Development Goals
