The Royal Scientific Society (RSS) was established in 1970 to provide effective means of utilizing available human and natural resources, and dedicating science and technology to the service of development, particularly in industrial fields, so as to achieve progress and prosperity for Jordan, and link people with the latest achievements of knowledge and technology.

RSS developed its activities responding to the needs of development concentrating on three major areas, namely scientific and technological research and development, technical services and consultations and human resources development. It used technology and adapted it to meet the needs of development in Jordan, and it initiated different activities in the service of development. RSS is a non-profit independent, administratively and financially, research institution. It has 650 employees with all the specialties it needs for running its activities, and it has the following technical centres: Computer Technology Centre, Electronic Services and Training Centre, Mechanical Design and Technology Centre, Building Research Centre, Industrial Chemistry Centre, Renewable Energy Research Centre, Environmental Research Centre, in addition to Princess Sumaya University College for Technology (PSUCT). The Industrial Studies Division in the Computer Technology Centre has conducted several industrial, social and economic studies. Among these studies are Poverty, Unemployment, Human Resources Development, Tourism Economy, Economy of Water Sector, Foreign Trade Agreements, Tourism Cooperation Agreements, Agricultural Agreements and Scientific and Cultural Cooperation Agreements.

On the front of human resources development, RSS provides advanced information and skills to different parties at different levels in different fields. Short and long-term specialized technical training courses are conducted for Jordanians and Arab trainees. RSS is a regional training centre in computer technology, renewable energy, and others. Within the framework of its function of developing human resources, RSS established a university college (PSUCT) at the undergraduate level to teach computer technology and electronic engineering utilizing RSS infrastructure with hands-on training.

RSS has many cooperation agreements with local institutions and a number of regional and international organizations in the fields of water, energy, environment, etc.
