ITM is one of the world’s leading institutes for training, research and assistance in tropical medicine and health care in developing countries. It works with its partners all over the world towards a common goal of “health for all”.
The ITM is structured in five scientific departments (Microbiology, Parasitology, Animal Health, Clinical Sciences, Public Health), which are composed of some 20 thematic Units and several interdepartmental laboratories and working groups. It also houses a specialised clinic for tropical diseases, travel medicine and HIV/AIDS with a hospital ward integrated in the University Hospital of Antwerp.
In addition, the ITM carries out fundamental, applied and operational research on main and forgotten tropical diseases of humans (AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, sleeping sickness, tropical ulcers, helminths, zoönosis) and cattle (trypanosomoses, theileriosis, helminths). It also carries comprehensive research programmes on epidemiology, nutrition, and health systems and services development.
