The principal activity of the Marga Institute is the study and critical evaluation of past and on-going development processes in Sri Lanka. While the main focus of the Institute’s work has been the Sri Lankan problems of development, it places these problems in the context of regional and global changes. The Institute has been active in promoting research collaboration in the South Asian region as well as in the Asia-Pacific region as a whole. With other South Asian research institutions, it has pioneered initiatives research networks which have studied issues of regional concern such as those of poverty, international migration and environment.
