The International Centre for Ethnic Studies (ICES) is a non-profit organization that attempts to develop a model of historically sensitive theoretical and empirical research on ethnicity, and related social and political processes. ICES aims to: provide an organized institutional focus for the study and understanding of ethnic conflict management, and to stimulate cross-national comparative research in ethnic studies. The Centre brings together scholars, policy makers, academics and others in public life for dialogue and to promote public understanding of ethnic issues.
ICES is engaged in a series of research and policy formulation programmes and projects in the areas of:
- ethnicity and racism
- minority protection
- gender issues
- conflict resolution
- governance
The ICES has worked with a range of local, national, regional and global partners to meet its mandate.
In addition to its scholarly work, ICES also has an active interest in educating public opinion towards more objective, informed and reasonable approaches towards ethnic problems. Its media programme, which is directed towards popular communication in Sri Lanka, is a major component of this activity.
