The goal of the IIIS is to conduct rigorous academic research on the global and regional dimensions of international economic, political and cultural integration. By developing new theoretical and empirical perspectives, it seeks to improve understanding about the many dimensions of the integration process.
In addition to supporting basic research that furthers the state of knowledge on international integration, the IIIS also seeks to disseminate its research findings in policymaking, business and general media circles.
The academic research of the IIIS is organized into three programmes:

- International Regulation
