FAO fisheries statistics are available in a number of formats. WWW site has description of data, and includes downloadable datasests/software
Information products include:
(a) FAO Yearbook of Fishery Statistics, Catches and Landings: print only
(b) FAOSTAT: WWW tables contain time series data by country on volume of annual production (catches and culture) from all waters, production of processed and preserved products, and external trade of these products in terms of volume and value. The data are provided for seven broad aggregates of species and six main types of products preservation. Fish Consumption (based on Food Balance Sheets) also available. Aggregates by continent and other geographical/economic groupings are also provided.
(c) Fishstat: PC product (database plus software) covering volume of fish catches landed by country of capture, species or a higher taxonomic level, and FAO major fishing areas. Volume is measured in tonnes for all items except aquatic mammals, alligators and crocodiles, which are measured by number of animals, and pearls, shells, corals and sponges which are measured in kilograms. Weights are of the whole animal (live weight) and coverage includes harvest by commercial, artisanal and subsistence fisheries, including aquaculture. Contains annual figures for the period 1950-1995. Can be downloaded (free) from WWW site)
(d) GFCM-PC/CECAF-PC: two PC databases with statistics from the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF) and the General Fisheries Council for the Mediterranean (GFCM). Covers catch and landings statistics for the countries’ flag vessels that fish in the area (data by country, species and sub-area). Can be downloaded (free) from WWW site
(e) Aquacult-PC: production quantity and price per kilogram by species, country and environment (1984-1995) for aquaculture fisheries (aquaculture defined as “the farming of aquatic organisms, that is some form of intervention is implied in the rearing process to enhance production, (such as regular stocking, feeding, protection from predators), plus individual or corporate ownership of the stock is implied” (FAO). PC database downloadable (free) from WWW site
