The Economic Science Research Institute is the organization responsible for economic research in the University of Costa Rica. Currently, it interacts with the four schools of the College of Economic Sciences (Economics, Statistics, Business Administration and Public Administration), and an interdisciplinary work team offers different services inside and outside the University.

IICE’s objectives are: to promote and develop Costa Rican economic and social research; to contribute to the comprehension of the complexities of the national and international economic system; to participate in interdisciplinary research developed in the centers of higher education in Costa Rica, summoning specialized researchers in economics, statistics, business administration and public administration; to promote and carry out research projects that contribute to improve the use of human resources and materials of the University of Costa Rica; to advise public and private institutions; and to promote the diffusion of new developments in economic science

The IICE is provided with a budget by the University of Costa Rica, which allows it to maintain a staff of full time researchers that make up the base of the Institute. Our research areas include: Industrial Organization, Environmental Economics and Natural Resources, Institutional Reform, Costa Rican Economic Development, Macroeconomic Structure and Structural Adjustment, External Trade, Labor and Social policies Economics, Educational Economics, Public Finance, Technology and Development. The IICE is a member of: IDB, INTAL, ICEG. It has carried out projects for international organizations
