The Department of Census and Statistics (DCS) is the central statistical agency in Sri Lanka, which is responsible for collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of all statistical data needed for planning and policy formulation. The DCS monitors the progress of various development activities and measures the impact of various governmental policies. It is also charged with the function of providing trained professional staff to all government agencies undertaking various statistical activities.

The mission of the DCS is to collect, compile and disseminate relevant, reliable and up-to-date statistical information required to monitor the progress of development and other socio-economic activities and to measure the impact of various governmental policies on the economy and the living standards of the people.
