The Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture, and Development (CIIFAD) together with partners in Africa, Asia and Latin America, initiates and supports programs that can contribute to improved prospects for global food security, sustainable rural development and environmental conservation. Established in 1990 at Cornell University in upstate New York, works towards advancements in knowledge and practice for sustainable agricultural and rural development.
CIIFAD has identified nine areas that it considers essential for overall success in sustainable agricultural and rural development. These are grouped under three broad themes:
- Technical / Biophysica
sustainable farming systems, natural resource management, and agricultural research
- Social / Huma
population dynamics, nutrition and health, and human potential
- Institutional / Polic
national policy frameworks, planning and management, and local capabilities
