How does forest management affect a forest or the people living in it? How can the impact of forest management be measured? Criteria & Indicators (C&I) are tools that can measure forest conditions and provide a framework for describing, monitoring and evaluating progress towards sustainable forest management. Collaborative research by CIFOR in Indonesia and the ODI in London attempts to complement regional and national processes using C&I tools at the smaller Forest Management Unit (FMU) level. Such measurements are more precise, the impact of forest management more evident. CIFOR has developed a master set of tools for use at the FMU-level, allowing objective on-site assessment of forest management.
