The report contains practical information as well as moving testimonies as to how Syrian refugees have taken action, with UNHCR and partner support, to empower themselves and promote gender equality. From establishing a women’s network that is now serving as a voice for urban Syrian refugees in Gaziantep, Turkey; and reaching out to prevent sexual and gender-based violence through courses for adolescent refugee girls in Lebanon; to implementing a comprehensive strategy to improve the protection of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex persons of concern in Jordan – these are examples of catalytic initiatives that promote equal access to rights.
In order to facilitate adaptation and replication in other contexts, each of the seven gender equality promising practices contains detailed information on the specific process and activities, partner and resources, results and lessons learned/recommendations. The report also includes a set of key practical recommendations on gender equality, which were generated by UNHCR and partner staff from the MENA region.
