Are large farms less productive than smaller ones? Do sharecroppers produce less than farmers who own their land? Would land tenure reform improve crop yields? Using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), research in Bangladesh from the University of East Anglia questioned common assumptions about farm productivity and has shown that soil fertility is the single most important factor in determining crop yield. Contrary to common belief, land tenure, farm size and farm fragmentation appear to have little effect on productivity. Would land reform make farms more productive? Clearly this is not the case, argues the report.
