How can National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) promote and protect reproductive rights? NHRIs are administrative bodies set up to protect or monitor human rights in a given country. There are over 100 such institutions – to whom the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) provides advisory and support services. This handbook, developed by the Danish Institute for Human Rights, with coordination provided by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and substantive input from OHCHR hypothesises that reproductive rights should be an area where NHRIs take charge, help set the public agenda and assist the state in living up to its responsibilities. It is intended to equip NHRIs with tools and guidance to integrate reproductive rights into their work and incorporates an overview of the meaning of sexual and reproductive health, guidance on how a human rights-based approach can advance reproductive rights and an outline of the legal basis for the rights that collectively constitute reproductive rights. Chapter 2 provides specific guidance on the role of NHRIs in furthering reproductive rights. A list of publications for further reading is incorporated as well as annexes including an overview of NHRI experiences with promoting and protecting reproductive rights.
