International IDEA was established in 1995. Member countries are: Australia, Barbados, Belgium, Botswana, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Denmark, Finland, India, Namibia, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, Sweden, institutional members also include the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights (IIHR), the International Press Institute (IPI) and Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA). Its work is not the reflection of any specific national or party-political interest. Its main objectives are: to promote and advance sustainable democracy world-wide; to broaden the understanding and promote the implementation and dissemination of the norms, rules and guidelines that apply to multi-party pluralism and democratic processes; to strengthen and support national capacity to develop the full range of democratic instruments.
Holds an annual Democracy Forum meeting. Publishes reports on democratic and electoral processes.
