The economic, social and political crisis that Argentina has suffered since mid-1998 has had a severe negative impact on the situation of women. It caused a sharp increase in the percentage of poor and extremely poor women, in maternal mortality and female HIV/AIDS infection rates, and in sex crimes, such as trafficking for the purposes of prostitution. This follow-up paper to the fifth periodic report was prepared at the request of the CEDAW Committee to address the gap in information on the impact of the crisis on women in Argentina, particularly indigenous, rural and other vulnerable women. The report provides an analysis of the situation, backed-up by the latest statistics, and outlines steps adopted by the current government to address the problems it inherited. Measures include the introduction of a gender sensitive perspective as an integral component of the countrywide programme for unemployed heads of household, the creation of a national programme for sexual health and responsible parenthood, and the drafting of a “Protocol of Action” to counter trafficking and to rehabilitate its victims.
