Private, nonprofit, grant-making organization created in 1983 to strengthen democratic institutions around the world. Through its International Forum for Democratic Studies (Forum), it also produces the Journal of Democracy, conducts analysis of the theory and practice of democratic development world-wide, and serves as a clearinghouse for information on that development through its Democracy Resource Center (DRC)
Also operates a discussion list called DemocracyNews (archived on WWW)
